MANILA – John Amores can no longer return for NorthPort Batang Pier in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) after the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) revoked his professional playing license.
In a statement on Sunday, the GAB found Amores guilty of “conduct unbecoming of a professional basketball player” and imposed the “severe penalty of revocation of his license.”
“The respondent’s license is revoked effective immediately,” stated in a six-page decision on Amores’ GAB Case No. 109-4 signed by chairman Francisco Rivera and commissioners Manuel Plaza III and Angel Bautista.
“Accordingly, the respondent is no longer allowed to participate in any professional basketball game sanctioned by the board,” added the government regulatory body for professional sports.
Amores is facing attempted homicide charges, along with his brother, for shooting a man he got into a heated altercation with after a basketball game in Lumban, Laguna last September.
As a punishment, PBA banned Amores for the entire 2024-25 PBA Commissioner’s Cup and that he can only return to action for the Batang Pier if he got a clearance from his counselor.
This is not the first time Amores was involved in a “basketbrawl” after previously punching University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons’ Mark Belmonte in a pre-season game in July, 2022 when he was still with the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers.
In the NCAA men’s basketball tournament later that year, Amores was once again involved in a “basketbrawl” when he charged to the College of St. Benilde Blazers’ bench and punched several players there.
Meanwhile, the PBA and the Batang Pier has yet to issue a comment regarding the situation of Amores not that he can no longer play in the country’s professional basketball league./PN
