Junior Azkals bow to Thailand

MANILA – The Philippine U-22 men’s football team suffered yet another defeat in the 2019 AFF U-22 Youth Championship after a 0-3 loss to Thailand on Tuesday at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

It was the second defeat of the Junior Azkals in the tournament and also booting them out of playoff contention after Vietnam scored a 4-0 victory against Timor Leste also on Tuesday.

The Thais drew first blood in the match with Jaroensak Wonggorn beating the Junior Azkals’ offside trap and calmly shot the ball past goalkeeper Michael Asong at the third minute.

Minutes later, the Thais doubled the advantage with Jedsadakorn Kowngam sneaking in a header over Asong. The Junior Azkals did not have a decent attempt against the scrappy Thailand.

The Thais widened further its lead in the second half with team captain Saringkan Promsupa eluding his defender to put the final nail in the coffin of the Junior Azkals.

The Junior Azkals will try to end their campaign on a bright note when it battles fellow eliminated Timor Leste on February 21 at the same venue./PN
