KALIBO, Aklan – Hostile gangs, police and local government officials have signed a peace covenant to end gang-related violence in Barangay Poblacion.
Police have condemned violent incidents involving frat members in C. Laserna, a densely populated area in Poblacion along the Aklan River bank, and resulting in injuries and deaths.
Mayor William Lachica, municipal police officers headed by Chief Inspector Terence Paul Sta. Ana and their Advisory Council, and C. Laserna purok leaders also joined the covenant signing, an initiative of the police, on Dec. 17.
Sta. Ana said they “seek reconciliation” and want to “establish harmonious ties and maintain peace and order in the community.”
“The gangs and their purok leaders agree to refrain from initiating gang wars, and abstain from doing illegal activities and committing petty crimes,” the covenant stated.
For their part, the Kalibo police vowed to continue educating the youth, creating programs and activities promoting their well-being and enhancing the capabilities of gang members.
After the covenant signing, the frat members and the local officials had a “boodle fight.”
The deputy chief of police Senior Inspector Honey Mae Ruiz, Sangguniang Bayan member Buen Joy French, Poblacion barangay kagawad Kim Melgarejo, and Municipal Police Advisory Council chairman Augusto Tolentino also attended. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
