MANILA – Kaya Futbol Club-Iloilo cruised to its fourth straight win in the 2019 Philippines Football League after a 1-0 victory over Stallion-Laguna FC at the Aboitiz Pitch in Lipa, Batangas.

A first half conversion from Ghanian striker Jordan Mintah was all the Ilonggos needed to stretch its winning streak on Saturday night and remain at second place with 34 points, on 11 wins, one draw and two losses.

“I’m just playing for the team to win each game. The more the team wins, the more the team is moving forward. We play together, we win together. I’m not into the Golden Boot. I’m playing just for the team to win. That’s all,” Mintah said.

Mintah immediately made his presence felt. He drained a lovely chip over the goalkeeper at the 18th minute.

Negrense Janrick Soriano, playing for injured Ilonggo Shirmar Felongco, spearheaded the defense to maintain the slim edge at the half.

Stallion-Laguna had a chance to equalize shortly before the final whistle, but Ilonggo veteran Ruben Doctora could only hit the crossbar with his header from a long throw by a teammate.

“We need to improve. It’s very important for us to finish this month of August on a high note,” Kaya-Iloilo head coach Noel Marcaida. “We just really worked on to become sharper in front of the goal.”

With the defeat, Stallion-Laguna has dropped to fourth spot in the standings with 21 points, on six wins, three draws and four losses./PN
