MANILA – Glenn Khobuntin came up with clutch baskets in the endgame as Kia Picanto barged to the win column of the PBA Philippine Cup, beating Rain or Shine Elasto Painters 98-94 on Saturday at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
Holding to a slim 92-89 lead with under two minutes left in the match, Khobuntin had back-to-back inside conversions to give Picanto its largest lead of the match 96-89.
Painters threatened to get close 94-96 on hits by Chris Tiu and had a chance to win it but kept misfiring. Picanto then sealed the victory with a breakaway layup by Khobuntin.
Khobuntin, who only played in the second half, finished with 11 points for Picanto, which ended an eight-month-long losing skid by tallying its first win in five games.
Rashawn McCarthy and Roider Cabrera led the scoring with 14 points apiece while Negrense Mark Yee and Eric James Camson added 13 and 11, respectively, for Kia.
“We are glad that our players showed up to play,” said Picanto head coach Ricky Dandan. “We are really frustrated with our consecutive losses, and we hope this win will start our run.”
Rookie Rey Nambatac came up with double-double 12 points and 12 rebounds while Negrense James Yap chipped in with 11 for Painters, which slid to a 2-3 win-loss card.
On Friday evening, three-time defending champion San Miguel Beermen came up with a huge push in the fourth quarter to score 109-98 over NLEX Road Warriors in a highly physical encounter.
Beermen’s impressive win was marred by numerous skirmishes, including an exchange of heated words between Beermen’s Chris Ross and Road Warriors head coach Yeng Guiao. Both were summoned to the PBA Commissioner’s Office for possible sanction./PN
