Man charged with child abuse

MALAY, Aklan – A 27-year-old man was arrested in Boracay Island on March 2 at around 4 p.m.

Policemen served to Ronnel Pablo a warrant of arrest for child abuse and took him to the Malay police station.

Pablo was accused of two counts of violation of Republic Act (RA) 7610 (Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act).

The court set Pablo’s bail bond at P200,000 for each count of the alleged violation. It was unclear as this was being written if he was able to post bail.

RA 7610 defines child abuse as the maltreatment, whether habitual or not, of the child which includes, among others, the following:

* psychological and physical abuse, neglect, cruelty, sexual abuse and emotional maltreatment

* any act by deeds or words which debases, degrades or demeans the intrinsic worth and dignity of a child as a human being

* unreasonable deprivation of his basic needs for survival, such as food and shelter

* failure to immediately give medical treatment to an injured child resulting in serious impairment of his growth and development or in his permanent incapacity or death/PN
