MANILA – Kelly Nabong and Jonathan Grey fought hard against former team
Meralco Bolts as GlobalPort Batang Pier went on a huge first half run en route
to a 107-88 victory in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Smart Araneta
Coliseum.
Nabong, whom Bolts sacked during the 2017 PBA Governors’ Cup playoffs for
his altercation with then assistant coach Jimmy Alapag, finished with 17 points,
17 rebounds and three blocks for Batang Pier.
Grey, a Meralco Draft pick, led the charge with 24 points, while Anthony and
Pringle chipped in with 18 and 17, respectively, for Batang Pier (3-3).
Nabong, a 29-year- old Filipino-American forward, said he did not treat the
match as a “revenge game,” just an ordinary one to help his new squad get
rolling.
“I’m in a great position right now with GlobalPort. I don’t keep any grudges,”
Nabong said. “Everything happens for a reason, and it is also my fault. I have
forgiven them and I hope they have forgiven me as well.”
Batang Pier jumped to an early lead with Nabong hoisting back-to- back treys.
The lead grew 48-30 late in the second period before Bolts made a last-ditch run
to come to within 37-48 at the half.
GlobalPort distanced once again in the third with Nabong teaming up with Sean
Anthony and Grey, and Stanley Pringle making a triple to build their largest lead
in the match 92-64.
Negrense Reynel Hugnatan and Chris Newsome top-scored with 17 points
apiece while Chris Michael Tolomia added 15 markers for Bolts (2-4)./PN
