ILOILO City – The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Western Visayas chose Boracay as the region’s pilot area for the national simultaneous earthquake drill on Dec. 15.
Jose Robert R. Nuñez, OCD regional director and Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) chairman, said Boracay – a tourist destination – need to be ready always, especially for evacuation.
“You have to inform the residents, especially in hotels, in tourist areas so they could prepare for the worst scenario,” he said.
But Nuñez pointed out that Aklan, Antique, Guimaras, and a part of Capiz similarly at risk of experiencing tsunami.
Moreover, the disaster management official said they will continue to engage local government units (LGUs) in more capability-building activities next year.
LGUs, especially those tsunami-prone areas, must heighten their preparations, Nuñez stressed.
The RDRRMC will call all local disaster management councils in the region to a summit to get feedback and deliver them to the national headquarters next year, he said. “This is going to be the first summit.”
The evaluation of the DRRM plan implementation, the capabilities of LGUs in Iloilo, and the result of the study conducted by Iloilo Provincial DDRM Office Jerry Bionat are the possible topics. (PNA)
