BACOLOD City – To fight malnutrition in this capital city, Councilor Em Ang proposed two ordinances: one establishing the Local Nutrition Committee, and the other, organizing a contest for the Healthiest Public School Canteen Award.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) approved in its first reading last week the two proposals.
Ang, chairwoman of the SP committee on health, said they are “currently going to various barangays conducting lectures on proper nutrition and distributing multivitamins to identified malnourished and undernourished children.”
A Jan. 24, 2018 report of the City Health Office (CHO) showed that the prevalence of stunting among children aged 0 to 71 months increased from 16.97 in 2016 to 21.1 percent in 2017.
The prevalence of wasting in the same age group also increased from 4.38 percent in 2016 to 6.8 percent in 2017, the report further stated.
The report only covered nine barangays in the city, though.
Ang said only nine out of 61 barangays in the city submitted their Operation Timbang Plus report to the CHO.
According to the councilor, the proposed Local Nutrition Committee will focus on programs that will help curb malnutrition.
The Local Nutrition Committee is expected to formulate the city nutrition policies, strategies, programs, and projects for nutrition improvement; coordinate the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the integrated city nutrition program; implement, supervise and monitor the implementation of the City Nutrition Action Plan; conduct periodic field visits and meetings with the Barangay Committee on Nutrition to assess the progress of the program implementation; and formulate the evaluation system.
Meanwhile, Ang’s other proposal aims to “motivate all public school canteens (in Bacolod City) to provide or sell only clean, safe and nutritious food and food products, by giving an award to those who are most compliant.”/PN
