ILOILO – More than 15,000 Ilonggos have enlisted for a government skills training program targeting villagers. And the number is expected to increase.
Barangay Kasanayan Para sa Kabuhayan at Kapayapaan program aims to bring technical-vocational education and training (TVET) closer to rural areas.
As of Nov. 4 interested participants in the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) program numbered around 15,745 from 1,901 barangays.
In August Tesda-Iloilo started mapping skills in all barangays here.
It distributed survey forms for the village officials to fill out with the names of their constituents and the skills they need, and those who want to avail themselves of the skills trainings offered by Tesda.
The respondents had the following sectors to choose from: Agri-Fishery; Automotive and Land Transport; Construction; Electronics; Garments; Health; Social and Other Community Development Services;
Heat, Ventilation, Air-conditioning, and Refrigeration; Information and Community Technology; Furniture; Maritime; Metals and Engineering; Processed Food and Beverage; Tourism; Wholesale and Retail Trading; Non-TVET; and Others.
Some 2,845 want to take the Driving National Certificate (NC) II course under the Automotive and Land Transport sector, preliminary survey results showed.
Rounding out the top five preferred courses are Automotive Service NC II, Cookery NC II, Dressmaking NC II, and Shielded Metal Arc Welding NC I.
Some 32,000 slots in the program will be made available for Western Visayas, according to Tesda director general Guiling Mamondiong, who led the program’s launch in the province on Oct. 19.
Through the program Tesda intends to create jobs in barangays to ultimately help alleviate poverty, Mamondiong said.
Local government units, agencies and other stakeholders have committed support to the program via a manifesto during the launch.
Among those who signed were Iloilo City mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, Department of Social Welfare and Development regional director Rebecca Geamala, and Department of Health assistant regional director Ma. Paz Corrales. (PIA/PN)
