ILOILO City – A total of 54,651 Western Visayan families displaced by 2013’s super typhoon “Yolanda” but who failed to receive Emergency Shelter Assistance (ESA) were each given P5,000 from the Presidential Assistance Fund (PAF).
According to Rosario Sanagustin, head for protection and social services of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 6, as of last month their PAF disbursement to these families already reached P273.2 million.
DSWD-6 started releasing the assistance in May 29, 2017.
Sanagustin said the 54,651 families – 19,589 from Aklan; 16,191 from Iloilo; 15, 610 from Capiz; and 3,261 from Antique – were among the 75,072 families qualified to receive PAF through a cash card issued by Land Bank of Philippines.
The remaining 20,421 families will receive their assistance through direct cash payout, said Sanagustin.
“Yolanda”, one of the strongest typhoons on record, struck the Philippines on Nov. 8, 2013. It forced hundreds of thousands from their homes and knocked out power and communications in several central Philippine provinces.
November last year during the third anniversary of “Yolanda”, President Rodrigo Duterte promised to release financial assistance to some 200,000 “Yolanda” survivors in regions 6 (Western Visayas), 7 (Central Visayas), 8 (Eastern Visayas), and the Negros Island Region who were not able to receive the ESA./PN
