KALIBO, Aklan –  A contract of P20.1 million was awarded to people’s organizations (POs) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to implement Aklan’s major reforestation projects such as the National Greening Program (NGP), Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) and Mangrove and Beach Forest Development Program (MBFDP).

The funds were distributed during the 1st People’s Organization Summit at the Social Hall of Ibajay, Aklan recently.

The signing of the agreement was intended for this year’s target of 1,333 hectares for upland, bamboo and mangrove reforestation.

Through this agreement, all parties pledged to work hand-in-hand for the effective implementation of the reforestation projects.

“I am glad that we are working towards the same goal – to create a better and more sustainable environment.  We are on the right track, and all parties should work together towards a more ecologically-friendly and climate-resilient Aklan,” said DENR regional director Jim Sampulna.

With the theme, “Inspiring NGP Lessons a Key Towards Enhanced National Greening Program 2028”, the Summit included other activities such as tree planting activity at Ibajay riverbank, photo and products exhibit of POs.

An “environment plaque” was given to the late Atty. Allen S. Quimpo in recognition of his contribution to environmental protection efforts in Aklan and as a distinguished People’s Organization (PO) Leader of the Kalibo Save the Mangrove Association (KASAMA). The plaque was received by his wife, Marianne. (DENR-6/PN)
