MANILA – Filipino fencers Louie Wayne Brennan and Nathaniel Perez scored a one-two finish in the men’s individual foil event of the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Filipino-American Brennan captured the gold medal after beating Perez, 15-14, in a tightly contested championship game.
Thai’s Sopanut Mayakarn and Singapore’s Jet Ng Shang Fei claimed the bronze medal.
In athletics, Eric Cray successfully claimed the gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles for the third straight edition but was unable to defend the 100-meter hurdles event settling for a silver medal.
Cray won the men’s 400-meter hurdles by the skin of the teeth with a time of 50.05 seconds, beating Vietnamese Phan Chac Hong (50.05). He, however, faltered in the 100-meter hurdles against Malaysian
Filipina gymnast Kaitlin de Guzman settled for a silver and bronze medal in the women’s artistic floor exercise and artistic beam event, respectively, a day after winning gold in the uneven bars event.
Also taking home silver medals were Jason Ramil Macaalay and Rexor Tacay after losing their finals games in karatedo, while Hanniel Abella also fell short in her finals match in fencing.
Bronze medalists were James Delos Santos, Junna Tsukli and Mae Soriano in kumite, swimmer Roxanne Yu in 200-meter backstroke, Evelyn Palabrica in javelin throw, Arniel Ferrera in hammer throw and Reyland Capellan in gymnastics.
As of press time, the Philippines remained at sixth place in the medal tally with eight gold, 12 silver and 16 bronze medals behind Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia./PN
