MANILA – Phoenix Fuel Masters stopped its two-game slide in the PBA Philippine Cup by defeating Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings 87-82 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Jeffrei Chan, William Wilson and Matthew Wright each posted 19 points while rookie Jason Perkins added 12 markers for Fuel Masters (3-3).
After trailing by as much as 6 points in the first quarter Friday night, Phoenix rallied back early in the second to tie the count 28-all before unloading a 21-0 run behind Chan and Wright for a 49-29 halftime lead.
Ginebra had a strong start in the third and managed to trim the deficit 47-60 but Fuel Masters came up with conversions from Wright and Wilson to build its largest lead 75-51.
Kings had another rally at the onset of the fourth to come close 70-81 but Fuel Masters countered with shots from Chan and Wilson for a 13-point edge.
Ginebra had its last push in the final minutes with consecutive points from Earl Scottie Thompson, Japeth Aguilar and Kevin Ferrer 82-85 but two free throws from Chan sealed the win for Phoenix.
“Buti na lang nakapagpundar ng maaga but a win is a win pa rin. At big win pa rin iyan against Ginebra,” said Fuel Masters head coach Louie Alas. “They just lacked the material. They lacked the personnel. Kung kumpleto iyan, mahirap talunin.”
Thompson finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds while Aguilar added 21 markers for Kings (2-3), which hopes to snap its skid when it faces San Miguel Beermen today./PN
