ROXAS CITY, Capiz – The local governments of Roxas City and Capiz province, together with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-6, have started the preparatory works for the Panay River dredging.

DPWH said they will start the desiltation and dredging at the outfalls of the Cogon-Jamul-awon River in barangays Barra, Bato and Banica towards Barangay Punta Cogon.

The Cogon-Jamul-awon Floodway is one of the major components of the Panay River Basin Integrated Development Project (PRBIDP) in Capiz.

The PRBIDP aims to address the perennial flooding in Capiz through the construction of a dam or reservoir, a floodway, cut-off channels, and improvements to major and secondary drains to benefit 11,460 hectares in the Panay basin, which is highly susceptible to flooding.

Roxas City’s Mayor Ronnie Dadivas conducted a consultative meeting with oyster and fish cage operators of Barangay Barra who will be affected by the dredging activities.

“Nalipay ako bangud sa ginpahayag nga kooperasyon sa sini nga hilikuton matapos nga mapaintindi sa ila ang maayo nga tinutuyo sini nga programa. Nagpasugot sila nga himuson nila ang mga fish structure agud hatagan ligwa ang pag-akad sa suba nga magaumpisa mismo sa Punta Barra,” said Dadivas.

Joining Dadivas during the consultation were Joey dela Cruz, who represented Capiz Gov. Fredenil Oto Castro, DPWH-6 representative Engr. Pedro Blancaver, DPWH 1st Engineering District representative Engr. Julius Abella, PENRO head Vicente Sardina, CENRO, councilor Bords Viterbo, and representatives from the offices of the City Engineer and City Agriculture./PN
