ILOILO – A 36-year-old man accused of raping his 12-year-old daughter was arrested in Barangay Trapiche, Oton town.
The suspect was charged with two counts of rape and six counts of rape by sexual assault in a court in Hamtic, Antique.
Police officers in Oton served an arrest warrant on the suspect around 9:30 a.m. yesterday and hauled him to their lockup cell.
The suspect denied sexually assaulting his daughter.
“Waay ko ya natandog ang batà ko a,” the suspect told Panay News in a phone interview.
The suspect claimed the aunt of his wife — a resident of Tobias Fornier, Antique — filed the charges against him.
“Si Mama Perla nagreklamo. Pero wala ko gin-rape batà ko a,” he insisted.
He told this reporter he and his wife had seven children.
Regional Trial Court Branch 11 (Hamtic) Judge Mario Andres Jr. issued the arrest warrant against the suspect. No bail bond was set for his temporary liberty.
Chief Inspector Alejandro Apostol Jr., Oton police chief, said they received the warrant on Thursday and were told to serve it.
Apostol was clueless on the case or the suspect’s background.
“All we had was the warrant [of arrest],” he told Panay News.
While the suspect resided in Barangay Trapiche, Oton, “he stayed in Hamtic, Antique for a while,” said Apostol.
The suspect will be staying in the Oton police station lockup cell this weekend.
“We cannot send him to Antique today (Friday) but we will on Monday,” said Apostol.
Victims of rape in the Philippines were getting younger, according to a research and training institution for women.
Recorded rape cases increased 92 percent to 9,875 in 2014 from 5,132 in 2010, the Center for Women’s Resources claimed.
Violations of Republic Act 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act, also jumped 200 percent, the center said, adding that seven out of 10 victims were children.
“The victims of violence are getting younger, and the abusers are becoming bolder and harsher,” a news website report quoted Executive Director Jojo Guan as saying.
The Philippine Commission on Women described rape as “one of the most prevalent forms of violence against women in the Philippines.”
But “due to cultural and social stigmatization associated with rape, many women victims prefer to maintain their silence and not report their ordeal to the authorities,” the commission said in a post on its website./PN
