ILOILO City – A total of 122 couples will tie the knot in a mass wedding on Valentine’s Day.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog will officiate the mass wedding around 3 p.m. at the Plaza Libertad.
The city government is initiating the event through the Civil Registrar’s Office and the Red Ladies of Iloilo City.
The couples were either living together but unwed or engaged, according to Red Ladies president Chytchymua Rejaba.
“We organized this mass wedding because couples living together without marriage find it difficult to enroll their children in school for they cannot present birth certificates,” said Rejaba. “Before the parents can get a birth certificate, they need to present a marriage contract.”
Rejaba said the wedding is free of charge, while Mabilog will sponsor the couples’ rings.
“We will design the Plaza Libertad to set the ambiance. We will let (the couples) experience what a real wedding is,” she added.
The Red Ladies initiated the first mass wedding in 2012.
Aside from the one on Valentine’s Day, the Red Ladies also organized a mass wedding in time for Mabilog’s birthday in September. (PNA)
