MANILA – Agriculture secretary Manny Piñol said rice will be sold in plastic bags starting mid-2019.

“[It’s] part of the reforms we are programming in the rice industry, rice business para masiguro na kung ano ang nabibili ng mga mamimili ‘yun talaga ang nakukuha nila,” Piñol said in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB.

Kung ano ‘yung nakikita niyo sa mga supermarket at department stores na binebenta sa sako, ‘yun din ‘yon,” he said.

Asked if this will not be damaging the environment, the Agriculture secretary said he is confident it will not be so.

Hindi naman siguro talagang makakasira ng ganu’ng kalaki ‘yon. Can we totally end the use of plastic bags?” he said.

Piñol also said there are now plastic bags made of biodegradable materials.

May nakapag-develop na using cassava. Puwedeng ma-develop pa later natin ‘yan,” he said. (GMA News)
