San Ag upsets Hua Siong in NBTC-Iloilo quarterfinals

UNIVERSITY of San Agustin pulled off an upset in Day 1 of the National Basketball Training Center Iloilo leg quarterfinals after a 90-86 overtime win over Hua Siong College of Iloilo Red Phoenix on Saturday at the Western Institute of Technology gym.

Jesmar Edgar Fulgencio and Arthur Peter Tuballes finished with 15 points each for San Ag, which have already assured of a semifinals seat after improving to 2-0 win-loss slate in their bracket.

Trailing 84-81 with over two minutes left in overtime, SanAg came up with back-to-back three point conversions from Fulgencio and John Michael Vicencio to surge ahead for good.

It was the second time that the SanAg have defeated the Red Phoenix after scoring a 70-67 stunner in the semifinals round of the 2018 Iloilo PRISAA secondary boys basketball last November.

Santa Clarita International School Primes, meanwhile, also move closer to a Final Four seat after an 89-83 win over CenterPhil Montessori Silver Knights. Ralph Bajon had 22 points, while Franc Steven Tono added 19 markers for the Primes.

St. Robert’s International Academy Panda Rockets, on the other hand, cruised to a 57-50 win over Sun Yat Sen High School. Gwyn Miles Pendon and Rolen John Pantin combined for 21 markers for the Panda Rockets.

The Integrated Academy School Systems Inc. also scored a victory after a 66-60 decision over the Iloilo National High School. JM Delos Santos tallied 18 markers for TIASS.

The top two teams from the combined groups will advance to the crossover semifinals round slated on Feb. 13 while the do-or-die championship game is scheduled on Feb. 14./PN
