SAN JOSE, Antique – Unique child-friendly initiatives allowed this capital town to bag the 2016 Seal of Child-Friendly Local Governance, according to Mayor Elmer Untaran.
Untaran boasted of the local government’s programs and projects catering to children and their welfare during his State of the Children’s Address at Robinsons mall.
San Jose envisions itself as “a municipality in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development, and participation toward a child-exemplary community,” the mayor said in his speech on Wednesday.
With strong support from the Municipal Council for the Protection of Children (MCPC) and the nongovernment sector, this vision was crafted and used as guide to “turn the (local government’s) plans for children into a reality,” he said.
“Our Children’s Code has inspired us to strive for a municipality that recognizes children as important assets of the society,” said Untaran.
One of such assets was Chynna P. Pajares, a student from Antique National School, won first runner-up in the regional Search for Exemplary Child, he noted.
San Jose also takes care of the children’s mothers through prenatal checkups at the Rural Health Unit and the barangay health centers, said Untaran.
“Eighty-five percent, or 1,409, of pregnant women (in the municipality) undergo regular checkup,” the mayor said.
Moreover, massive deworming in schools and barangays was being conducted at least twice a year, said Untaran.
In addition, “the [local government] has been blessed to have forged a partnership with the Consuelo Zobel Alger Foundation,” he said.
The foundation has allocated P9.1 million for a three-year partnership for programs that prevent the abuse, neglect and exploitation of children, said the mayor.
A joint venture of the local government’s MCPC and the foundation has created a venue where children can showcase their skills and talents, as well as prove themselves worthy of becoming leaders, Untaran said. (PNA
