SAN JOSE, Antique – “This is the happiest Christmas for the people of San Jose.”

Thus said Mayor Elmer Untaran after this capital town topped first- to third-class municipalities in the 2016 Excellence in Local Governance Award.

San Jose won in four categories: administrative governance, social governance, economic governance, and environmental governance.

The town received the award from the Department of the Interior and Local Government during a ceremony at Punta Villa Training Center in Iloilo City on Wednesday.

On Thursday Untaran attributed their achievement to the municipal government’s department and office heads.

Under administrative governance, San Jose was cited for adopting GPS data for business enterprises.

The town carries out a program promoting a productive life among senior citizens and was recognized by the Association of the Local Social Welfare and Development Officers of the Philippines, Inc. for its welfare programs — all of which were credited for its excellence in social governance.

Handing San Jose the excellence in economic governance plum is its “Produkto Antiqueño,” which helps micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) grow by promoting and providing market access to local products.

The program covers 34 MSMEs, including those from neighboring towns.

While without a forest area, San Jose participated in reforestation activities in a 50-hectare forest of a nearby town in a bid to address the impact of climate change. This was credited for its excellence in environmental governance. (PNA)
