MANILA – Seeking the presidency has not yet crossed his mind, according to Sen. Manny Pacquiao.
While President Rodrigo Duterte has been egging him to run in the 2022 election, Pacquiao believes it is too early to think about the presidency.
“Nagulat ako … pero masyado pang maaga para pag-isipan ang bagay na iyan,” he said in a statement. “Madami pa tayong mga bagay-bagay na pinagkaka-abalahan.”
“Sa ngayon, ang focus muna natin ay sa Senado, sa boxing,” he added. “Hindi pa naman tayo nagre-retire sa boxing, saka na iyong tungkol diyan.”
In speeches, Duterte has informally endorsed Pacquiao as a candidate in the 2022 presidential election.
Earlier Pacquiao said he is open to the possibility of running for president. By 2022, he will be 43 years old and age-eligible.
Meanwhile the senator reiterated he is not yet retiring from boxing and plans to fight twice next year during Senate breaks.
“Hinahanap-hanap pa rin natin ang boxing,” said Pacquiao. “Hindi ko pa masabi kung hanggang kailan tayo dito, pero hindi pa tayo magre-retire.”
