BACOLOD City – Department of Health’s (DOH) plan to distribute condoms in schools is not the answer to the increasing cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) cases among the youth, a priest of the Diocese of Bacolod said.
Fr. Felix Pasquin, rector of the San Sebastian Cathedral, said such development can be a challenge to families in appreciating religious values which are the basis of children’s character growth.
The government, school and the community should instead join forces with the church, renewal groups and civic clubs in promoting an environment towards a healthy appreciation of sex, said Pasquin.
“It should be looked at as God’s gift and hence, sacred,” he added. “Seeing sex not as the world sees it, but as God intends it to be used.”
Pasquin said it saddens the Church that DOH is resorting to condom distribution to stop the rising cases of HIV/AIDS. In Thailand, the massive promotion of condoms has not stopped the increase of HIV/AIDS cases, he stressed.
DOH secretary Paulyn Ubial said they were planning to distribute condoms in schools, specifically in school clinics, to help inform students on HIV/AIDS.
“DOH sounds the alarm on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country. It is increasing every day,” Ubial said.
The DOH chief said there is a need to develop a “business unusual strategy”, which means going down to the communities, to the households, involve the parents, the education sector, the teachers, and the community. (PNA)
