ZAMBOANGA City – Tropical storm “Vinta” destroyed an estimated P32.35 million worth of products from 951.2 hectares of agricultural and fishery areas, the Office of the City Agriculture reported.
“Vinta” struck several areas in the Zamboanga region when it entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Dec. 22, 2017.
A total of 710 local farmers were affected by the storm, City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat stated in a report to Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar.
Of the number, 224 were rice and crop farmers covering 193.2 hectares of farmlands in barangays Vitali, Mangusu, Licomo, and Tictapul, Palacat said.
The remaining 486 were fishpond and seaweed farmers from barangays Licomo, Tictapul, Vitali, Limaong, and Taguite, with reported fishery damages in more than 758 hectares, he said.
Assistance will be provided to the affected farmers, the city agriculturist added.
“Vinta” affected six barangays in the 2nd District – locally known as the “east coast” – displacing 763 families, or 3,850 individuals, said Socorro Rojas, City Social Welfare and Development Office head.
Flash floods washed out at least 12 houses and partially damaged 24, city social welfare office records showed. (PNA)
