ILOILO – An indigenous people (IP) community in Barangay Panuran, Lambunao town received solar lamps, thanks to a blog written by a Grade 11 student in Hercules, California, whose parents hail from Iloilo.
Mary Perez, a global ambassador for One Million Lights Foundation, and her family went home to Iloilo to personally deliver the 100 solar lamps, according to Jennifer Osorio, municipal tourism officer of Lambunao.
Panuran is about 16 kilometers from the town proper and accessible via a rough road.
While there are lights at the village proper, some of the far-flung sitios (hamlets) have yet to be reached by the government’s electrification program.
Romeo Loraña, chieftain of Panuran IPs, met Miriam Lima, who works at the Department of Education (DepEd), during a cultural gathering, telling her that pupils in their hinterland sitios study using kerosene lamps, Osorio said.
Lima is an aunt of Perez. They are from Mandurriao district in Iloilo City.
Over the weekend, Mary and parents Edgardo and Myra went to Panuran to turn over the donations raised through Mary’s blog.
Each lamp costs US$15 and with a five-year lifespan.
One Million Lights is an organization with a mission to “improve the daily lives of children and adults by providing clean and healthy lighting,” a description on its website read.
Lambunao mayor Jason Gonzales, One Million Lights Philippines focal person Raffy Tan Pho, DepEd personnel, and other local officials joined the Perez family during the turnover. (PNA)
