ILOILO City – Soldiers clashed with New People’s Army rebels yesterday in Barangay Maliao, Leon, Iloilo, the Philippine Army said.
Members of the 12th Infantry Battalion were responding to a report that armed men were spotted near their detachment, according to Captain Eduardo Precioso, 3rd Infantry Division spokesperson.
The exchange of gunfire started at around 11:25 a.m. and lasted about 20 minutes.
The rebels – there were around 10 – withdrew and escaped toward various directions afterwards, said Precioso.
No casualties from among the government troops were reported.
The Army was still verifying whether or not there were casualties or injuries on the part of the armed men.
“We are thankful for the efforts of the community in giving us information on the presence of the rebels,” Precioso said.
More soldiers were sent to Leon to help in an ongoing hot pursuit, the military said.
“The effort of the community signifies its vigilance against recruitment, terrorism and extortion,” said Precioso.
Just this June government troops and NPA rebels also clashed in Leon but in Barangay Lampaya.
During the exchange of gunfire, a village watchman of Lampaya, Romeo Cabalong, was shot on the left shoulder.
He was confined at the Western Visayas Medical Center but died 25 days later.
The bullet also hit his liver and spinal column, according to Lampaya barangay captain Ramonito Camral./PN
