BACOLOD City – Authorities must aggressively inspect tricycles plying routes across the city, the Sangguniang Panlungsod stressed.
Councilors urged the Bacolod City Police Office’s Traffic Management Unit and the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office to ensure public safety by making sure all tricycles here are legitimate public transportation.
Tricycles must “secure business permits, registrations and licenses to operate,” Councilor Caesar Distrito said in a resolution the city council approved on Monday.
Distrito authored the resolution in light of the alleged robbery and rape of a call center agent in Barangay Mansilingan last week.
According to the councilor, the incident should be a “wakeup call” for all law enforcement units in Bacolod City.
Employees on night shift are forced to hire tricycles on their way to work and going home due to the lack of other public utility vehicles late in the evening and very early in the morning, said Distrito.
But some of the tricycles are colorum, or without license and business permit, he said.
Due to lack of record with the authorities, colorum tricycles are difficult to track, especially when used in criminal activities.
Meanwhile Distrito said the city council also passed a resolution encouraging all businesses to install security cameras due to the rising number of burglaries in stores and cars.
Footages taken by security cameras will help the police hasten the investigation, he said.
“Thieves are getting bolder. Even at daytime they would aggressively attack parked cars and ransack everything inside,” said Distrito.
He advised car owners to be responsible for their vehicles and not leave their valuables inside them./PN
