BACOLOD City – The Solid Waste Action Team (SWAT) will meet with all the barangays in the city to discuss the schedule of garbage collection for the “no segregation, no collection” policy’s implementation next month.
The policy is in line with Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, which seeks to create necessary mechanisms and incentives for protection of public health and environment.
Part of the Act states, “ensure the proper segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment and disposal of solid waste through the formulation and adoption of the best environmental practice in ecological waste management excluding incineration.”
Anyone who will not comply with the policy will face penalties under the law, said Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran who also chairs the SWAT.
Familiaran said he will meet with the 61 barangays to know their preferred schedule of collection before the policy starts on September 1.
He also urged barangay councils to inform their residents.
“Under the law, the barangays are the ones that must conduct information drives because they are the front liners,” explained Familiaran.
The barangays must also be “proactive in implementing the policy,” added Familiaran.
The SWAT will also distribute flyers to households./PN
