KALIBO, Aklan – The number of tuberculosis (TB) cases in the province is increasing, according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO).
PHO records showed that more than 3,000 cases of TB were recorded from October to January this year.
“In 2016, we only had recorded more than a thousand TB cases. Now, it increased three folds,” said PHO nurse Maribel Fernandez.
The PHO attributed the increase to untreated TB cases.
The health office said several TB-infected individuals do not seek medical attention, thus making their condition worse and further spreading the disease.
The PHO is taking measures to mitigate the spread of TB.
PHO personnel are giving free medicines to TB patients.
“But there are those who ignore taking the medicine in complete terms. It makes them drug-resistant,” Fernandez said.
This month, the PHO is targeting to help indigenous people in the hinterland barangays Madalag and Libacao who are infected by TB./PN
