ILOILO City – A total of 15,745 Ilonggos have already enlisted in the Barangay Kasanayan Para sa Kabuhayan at Kapayapaan (BKPKK) program of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) from the 1,901 barangays in the province as of Nov. 4.
The program is a poverty reduction strategy of the Duterte administration which aims to bring technical and vocational education and training (TVET) services to Ilonggos.
TESDA-Iloilo has started the conduct skill mapping in all the barangays of the province since the month of August.
The survey forms were disseminated to barangay officials and distributed to the respondents for them to fill out the questions such as the names of their constituents and the skills they need. The forms were also distributed to determine the people who would like to avail themselves of the skills training program being offered by the government and implemented by TESDA.
The respondents chose from 16 sectors:
*agri-fishery
*automotive and land transport
*construction
*electronics
*garments
*health, social and other community development services
*heat, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration
*information and community technology
*furniture
*maritime
*metals and engineering
*processed food and beverages
*tourism
*wholesale and retail trading
*non-TVET
*others
Around 2,845 enlisters aim to get of the Driving National Certificate (NC) 2 course under the Automotive and Land Transport sector while Automotive Service NC 2, Cookery NC 2, Dressmaking NC 2 and Shielded Metal Arc Welding NC 1 were the top four preferred qualifications, survey results showed.
The launch of the program was headed by TESDA director general Atty. Guiling Mamondiong with 32,000 scholarship slots made available for Western Visayas under the program on Oct 19.
According to Mamondiong, the agency intends to create jobs in the barangays as part of their efforts to help alleviate poverty through this program.
Iloilo City mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, Department of Social Welfare and Development 6 director Rebecca Geamala and Department of Health 6 assistant regional director Ma. Paz Corrales signed the manifesto. (With a report from PIA/PN)
