MANILA – Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws set up a rematch with University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses in the UAAP Season 80 women’s beach volleyball finals.
Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza made a return trip to the finals after a 21-8, 21-18 win over University of the Philippines Lady Maroons’ Diana Carlos and Arielle Estranero during their semifinals on Friday at the Sands SM by the Bay in Pasay City.
After a lopsided opening set, Lady Maroons kept in step with Lady Tamaraws and rendered the latter just 2 points ahead 18-16 before the game was momentarily halted due to heavy rain and wind.
But the lull in the game enabled Pons and Atienza to regain their form as they racked up 3 consecutive points to pounce on Carlos and Estranero.
Despite the defeat, Lady Maroons – which ousted De La Salle University Lady Spikers’ Ernestine Tiamzon and May Luna 17-21, 21-19, 15-12 in the first step-ladder – is assured of its best finish ever in the tournament.
Golden Tigresses’ Cherry Rondina and Caitlyn Viray gained an outright passage into the best-of-three championship series after sweeping their seven elimination round matches.
In the men’s division, UST has a chance to score a double championship as the Tiger Spikers’ pair of Kris Roy Guzman and Anthony Arbasto advanced to the finals with a 21-17, 21-16 win over FEU Tamaraws’ Jude Garcia and Jeremiah Barrica.
Guzman and Arbastro will face National University Bulldogs’ Bryan Bagunas and James Natividad, who made it outright to the finals with an elimination round sweep./PN
