MANILA – University of the East Red Warriors survived a poor shooting by Alvin Pasaol to pull off a 90-77 upset over National University Bulldogs in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball yesterday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

With Pasaol struggling with just 11 points, Red Warriors turned to Mark Olayon, rookie Mark Maloles, Wilson Bartolome, and Nick Abanto to clinch its second consecutive victory in eight games.

Olayon finished with 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds; Bartolome had double-double 14 points and 11 rebounds; while Maloles and Abanto had 13 points each for Red Warriors.

Holding to a slim 62-59 lead, Red Warriors started strong in the final quarter with hits from Maloles and Abanto for a 69-61 lead. Bulldogs, however, countered with a run to cut it to 65-70.

Red Warriors kept Bulldogs at bay with conversions from Olayon, Bartolome and Abanto to build its largest lead in the match 90-74 on a driving layup by Philip Manalang.

UE actually had a strong start and managed to build 52-41 early in the third following a conversion by Pasaol but Bulldogs rallied back to come to within 59-62 on inside hits by Issa Gaye.

Gaye finished with double-double 20 points and 13 rebounds while Rodolfo Alejandro missed a triple-double with 16 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds for Bulldogs, which dropped to a 3-5 win-loss record./PN
