BORACAY – Environment department personnel caught two vehicles dumping waste at Wetland No. 8 in Block H, Barangay Manoc-manoc, a timberland area, the department said.
Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) personnel led by Jonne Adaniel were inventorying forest occupants when they apprehended the culprits.
One of the vehicles was a mini dump truck (plate number YHZ 704) owned by Darwin Yupo of Paradise Trass Corp. The other was a multi-cab (plate number GPC 665) owned by Junnifer Salguero of Ibajay, Aklan.
The vehicles were placed in the temporary custody of Barangay Manoc-manoc.
The violators – the multi-cab owner and the mini dump truck driver – were issued temporary apprehension receipts.
“We will make them answer for their defiant act,” Regional Director Jim O Sampulna said.
“I do not think they are ignorant of the law,” he added. “And to think that we just conducted a massive education and information campaign on Ecological Solid Waste Management Act in Boracay.”
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 6 is stepping up environmental monitoring in Boracay in compliance with an order from Secretary Roy Cimatu.
A total of 1,906.7 tons (5,399.1732 cubic meters) of residual wastes were hauled from the island to mainland Malay recently.
The hauling that lasted 15 days took 571 boat trips, the department said. (With DENR Region 6/PN)
