ROXAS City – Two natives of Barangay Lantawan, Sara, Iloilo denied having a hand in the fatal shooting of a hardware and grocery store owner in President Roxas, Capiz.
Jose Dacula and son Erwin were among the five suspects in the attack that killed Arnel Bucayan and wounded his wife Analou in Barangay Poblacion, President Roxas on Sunday, Dec. 11.
A robbery with homicide charge was filed against them and two John Does on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at a court in President Roxas. Police filed the case.
They were also subjected to a paraffin test. Results have not been released as of this writing.
The other suspect, identified as Roger Estrella, died when he was shot by the Bucayans’ store security guard Noel Tumlos Jr.
Citing the surviving victims’ claim, Senior Inspector Rachel Garnica, municipal police chief, told Panay News the suspects carted away P4 million.
DENIAL
Tumlos “positively identified” the Dacula father and son as Estrella’s accomplices, police said.
But the 26-year-old Erwin Dacula vehemently denied this.
“We don’t know him (Estrella),” Erwin said while inside the President Roxas police station lockup cell. “We had nothing to do with the killing.”
Erwin and his 56-year-old father were caught in the house of the latter’s sister, Elsa Dacula-Sarabia, in Barangay Hanglid, some 500 meters away from the crime scene.
They claimed they went to Bailan District Hospital in Pontevedra, Capiz around 2 p.m. on Sunday to get a medical certificate, and later in the day took shelter at Elsa’s house amid torrential rains.
Police arrested them when they were about to go to another relative, a certain “Tilong” dela Torre, in the poblacion, they said. Officers then seized their motorcycle.
The shooting happened around 6 p.m. while the Bucayans, Tumlos and aide Jonel Ginog were walking home from their store.
Two men riding in tandem in a motorcycle pulled over, shot them and took Analou’s bag containing cash, police said.
Tumlos ran to seek cover and fired back at the suspects when the shooting stopped, hitting Estrella, who died of a gunshot wound on the chest.
The other suspects managed to escape, police said.
Garnica told Panay News the alleged P4 million was not recovered from the Daculas, so it was possible the cash was with the two John Does.
Arnel, 54, died of a gunshot wound on the forehead, while Analou, 53, had one on the left forearm./PN
