Western Visayas’ girl spikers settle for Palaro bronze

ILOCOS Sur – Western Visayas salvaged a bronze medal in the 61st Palarong Pambansa secondary girls volleyball following a 25-17, 25-21 win over Region 8 here yesterday.

Led by Best Server awardee Shane Carmona, Alyssa Bertolano and Kiesha Bedonia, the Blue Barons pounced on the miscues of Region 8 to finish off the classification match in two sets.

“It is still a good run for us,” assistant coach Biboy Calamba told Panay News. “While we fell short of our goal, we’re still happy. We were able to contribute a medal for our region.”

The Blue Barons had a perfect run in the eliminations and easily breezed the semifinals round following a 25-8, 25-16 win over Davao in the quarterfinals round behind Joan Monares and Carmona.

The Blue Barons, however, faltered in the semifinals round following a 22-25, 15-25 defeat to Calabarzon on Thursday afternoon.

National Capital Region claimed the gold medal following a 12-25, 25-12, 25-18, 17-25, 15-12 win over Calabarzon.

Bacolodnon Angel Canino was named as the Most Valuable Player.
Meanwhile, Western Visayas’ secondary boys basketball failed to reach the championship round following an 85-80 defeat to Davao in the knockout semifinal.

After trailing for most of the way, Western Visayas snatched a one-point lead late in the match but Davao responded back to force a 78-all score. Davaoenos then capped the game with a 6-1 scoring run to bag the victory.

In elementary boys basketball, Western Visayas punched a ticket to the gold medal match following a 74-62 win over defending champion Calabarzon. It will face the National Capital Region for the crown today./PN
