Why Company Culture Matters

Sure, our jobs put food on the table and pay the bills.  But more than keeping body and soul intact, our jobs allow us to feel a sense of pride.  For the newbies in the workforce, it’s a huge step towards independence, self-reliance, and becoming `contributing members of the community.

Dig deeper and we find that your career forms part of your identity outside the family.  Who am I in addition to being a father? Mother? Child? Society? What impact do I make in my circle with the work that I do?  Many aspects of life come to play with the job you hold.

This is why given the distinctive opportunity to choose among jobs (and everything else being equal), you sign up for the organization that shares the same set of values you do.

“Work culture” has been a buzzword for the past decade for good reason.  While many still suppose that the terms “work culture” (and its cousins) are terms to enchant and lure goodwill, it can make or break a company.

Work culture is a set of values, behaviors, beliefs, goals, attitudes, and expectations that people in an organization share.  It’s a naturally occurring phenomenon developed with or without intention.   What makes a company culture thought-provoking is that it isn’t just a singular idea.  You can see it as much as you can feel it with the way they react and treat each other.

Organizations, regardless of industry, who have survived challenging economic recessions, have one thing in common.  They have a robust team.  They’re quick to act, quick to make decisions.  They trust each other’s competence. And they exercise interdependence.  As a result, the organization/business is able to adapt to the changing demands of its clientele swiftly.  The pandemic, for instance, has been a trying year.  Those who have managed to survive (or even upscale) are the ones with a strong support system within their organization.

Take a peek into the more successful companies, and you will most likely feel a strong sense of camaraderie.  Anyone can work with mean bosses or indifferent colleagues.  But for how long?  And what does this do to productivity?  When the atmosphere is pleasant, you see a significant and measurable improvement in the bottomline.  Better cash flows, lower costs, less overtime, lower turnover rates, and even fewer accidents.  And it helps to feel like you’re working amongst friends you trust.

All this because of company culture?

No.  But we can safely say that the culture in the workplace has a LOT to do with it.  If the offer feels the same, or if you feel that the choice is between two good things, opt for the one with a great company culture.

When employees feel recognized and heard, when they feel appreciated, they naturally want to do more of the good stuff – whether the good stuff means going beyond what their job requires.  And when this happens all the time, everyone benefits.

So what’s a good company culture?

Don’t equate a good company culture with the perks – free coffee, sleeping pods, free Friday lunches, arcade rooms … It’s awesome, of course, but it’s not all that you should look for.  An honest-to-goodness company culture that translates to a great career sees its people as assets.  Company cultures that have been highly rated are those that support involvement. It’s one where management provides positive and enjoyable ways to engage people.  It’s a culture that caresaboutyou, your professional development, and your personal growth.
