YOUR — or your ex’s — cold heart has nothing to do with your early-morning February shivers. What many consider an unusually cold and windy weather in recent days should not come as a surprise.
It’s the northeast monsoon, or amihan, according to the officer-in-charge of the Pagasa Agro-Meteorological Station in Dumangas, Iloilo.
“Kon may amihan sa Visayas, especially diri sa aton sa Western Visayas, naga us-os ang aton temperature (Temperature normally lowers whenever the northeast monsoon blows in Visayas, especially in Western Visayas),” Ricky Dador told Panay News.
Apparently, all that cold feeling would not last the whole day.
“Ma-eksperyensyahan sang aton pumoluyo, ilabi na gid sa kaagahon, ang kalamig, pero sa udto, ma-eksperyensyahan naman naton ang kapaang (We may feel cold at dawn, but the weather turns warm and humid by noon),” said Dador.
January to March is the peak of the northeast monsoon season, according to Pagasa.
“Surges of cold temperature are expected,” particularly from January to February, it stated in a Seasonal Climate Outlook. “Surface air temperatures are expected to be slightly cooler than average in mountainous Luzon, while slightly warmer than average over the rest of the country.”
Gradual weakening of the northeast monsoon may begin toward the end of February or early March, Pagasa said.
The melting ice in Siberia in Russia may also have something to do with what many Ilonggos take as an oddly cold month, especially that Christmas — to which snow (in other countries) or rain is attributed — was way over.
“Tungod sa Siberia nagakatunaw ang ice, every time mag-us-os ang hangin diri, ibaslon sang amihan (The northeast monsoon carries the cold air, brought about by melting ice in Siberia, down to the south),” Dador said.
The cold weather starts in January and lasts until February, when the lowest temperature during the period may be recorded, the Pagasa officer said.
Dumangas was the pilot area for the Agro-Met project of the state weather bureau Pagasa (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration).
Data gathered from the station are transmitted to the Pagasa central office for interpretation, and then sent back to the Agro-Met station for dissemination purposes./PN
