ILOILO City – “Let us not wait for the world to change, let us be the change we wish to be! Let us make our region child-friendly and most especially, drug-free.”
This is a part of the Children’s Statement that will be read simultaneously during flag-raising ceremonies in all public and private elementary and secondary schools in Western Visayas on Nov. 6 in celebration of the 25th National Children’s Month.
The statement is a consolidation of messages from presidents and representatives of Supreme Student Governments (high school) and Supreme Pupil Governments (elementary) of 56 schools in this city.
The messages were made during the Advocacy on the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child on Oct. 7.
The event was spearheaded by the Iloilo Children Welfare Foundation, the Department of Education (DepEd) and partner child-advocate groups.
In the statement, the children expressed that they are one with the government in its campaign against illegal drugs, violence, abuse, and exploitation.
“As children, we also stand united with the government’s fight against illegal drugs. Please make us understand what is right and show us the effects of illegal drugs. We wish to grow up in a community that promotes preservation of our innocence, away from violence, abuse and exploitation,” another part of the statement read.
Raji Alvarado, secretariat of the Regional Sub-Committee for the Welfare of Children 6 (RSCWC 6), said they have agreed that the DepEd and the Commission on Higher Education must require elementary and secondary schools in the region to read the statement during their flag-raising ceremonies on the set date.
Students and pupils must also sign the statement printed on a tarpaulin – to be posted within school vicinity – the RSCWC 6 said.
Alvarado added that RSCWC 6 member-agencies and partner advocates were also encouraged to observe such in their respective offices. (PIA/PN)
