ILOILO City – Western Visayas with its many coastal destinations and eco-tourism spots raked in P114.12 billion in tourist receipts for the year 2016 – higher than the P102.27 billion of 2015 – establishing a curve that shows the leisure and vacation industry in the region is on the upswing.

Tourist receipts come in the form of consumption expenditures or payments for goods and services made by foreign visitors with foreign currency resources – and the 89.62 percent increase in the region reflects the rising influx of more foreign tourists to Western Visayas.

In the second quarter of 2016 alone – summer and typically the peak season – 896,528 tourists in total visited Western Visayas, with  200,801 of them being foreign nationals.

For the entire year, the regional Department of Tourism accounted for 5,198,634 tourist arrivals, with 4,113,835 domestic visitors,1,032,133 foreigners, and 47,666 visiting overseas Filipino workers – significantly higher by almost half a million compared to 2015’s 4,632,331.

Nationally, the estimated visitor receipts for the month of February 2017 aggregated to about P18.40 billion.

The Average Daily Expenditure (ADE) registered at P3,882.00 while the Average Length of Stay (ALoS) of tourists in the country for the month was recorded at 9.77 nights.

South Korea accounted for most of 2016’s foreign tourists at 357,362, followed by China with 281,227. Rounding out the Top 5 are Taiwan (58,859), USA (42,142), and Malaysia (28,114)./PN
