MANILA – PBA Governors’ Cup defending champion Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings set up a finals rematch with Meralco Bolts after winning Game 4 of its semifinals series against TNT KaTropa last night.
Kings turned to Justin Brownlee and LA Tenorio in the second half to score 115-105 against KaTropa at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Ginebra was down by 18 points early in the third quarter when Brownlee led a huge 10-point run to come to as close as 85-88 before Kings took the lead 92-90 on 5 straight points by the import.
With scores tied at 94, Kings surged anew with a triple from Brownlee before Tenorio took over with back-to-back triples and Greg Slaughter scored an inside hit to establish their largest lead 115-103.
Brownlee finished the match with 46 points, with 28 coming in the second half. Tenorio added 25 with six triples while Slaughter had 21 markers and nine boards.
Kings’ best-of-seven finals series against Bolts starts on Friday, Oct. 13 at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City.
“It’s the halftime talk by (Ginebra legend Robert) Jaworski that inspired us to perform better in the second half,” said Brownlee. “We became aggressive in the second half, and our shots were falling.”
KaTropa had a blazing start on triples from Anthony Semerad and Troy Rosario. It kept the edge heading into the second half despite the ejection of Glen Rice Jr.
The temperamental TNT import was slapped with a flagrant foul penalty 1 late in the first after shoving Kings’ forward Kevin Ferrer before getting ejected for a technical foul when he threw the ball at the latter.
Rosario top-scored with conference-high 28 points, including four triples, while Jayson Castro had 26 points, nine assists and eight rebounds for KaTropa, which finished the Governors’ Cup on third place./PN
