SAN JOSE, Antique – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) here urged residents to safeguard themselves from natural disasters by applying measures which they have learned from trainings conducted by local governments.
PDRRMO-Antique chief Broderick Train made the call after a 4.6-magnitude earthquake jolted this province around 8:29 a.m. on Aug. 5.
Train said based on their monitoring, no structure and facilities were damaged by the earthquake that had its epicenter in the municipality of Patnongon.
“The people, however, felt alarmed because of it,” he added.
According to Train, earthquakes could be experienced by residents, especially during onset of the rainy season when there is softening of soil.
The PDDRMO could not conduct earthquake drills in localities because of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, he said.
Should an earthquake occur, Train reminded residents to “drop down to the floor, cover under a sturdy table or desk and hold until the earthquake stops.”
The PDDRMO held a caravan from the northernmost town of Libertad to the southern town of Hamtic on July 31 to celebrate the 2020 National Disaster Resilience Month.
Among the agencies that participated were the Department of Education, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Red Cross, Philippine National Police, Department of Public Works and Highways, and the Municipal DRRMOs, Train said. (With a report from PNA/PN)
