BACOLOD City — The Bacolod City Government has signed an agreement with SyCip Gorres Velayo & Co. (SGV) to conduct a Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS), a key initiative aimed at strengthening the city’s long-term waste management program and updating its 10-year Solid Waste Management Plan.
The agreement was formally signed on May 14 at L’Fisher Hotel, marking what city officials described as a significant step toward developing science-based and sustainable waste management solutions for Bacolod.
Mayor Greg Gasataya said the partnership will help the city address growing waste management challenges through data-driven planning and environmentally sound policies.
“This study will help us clearly understand how much waste Bacolod produces and what steps we need to take to improve our waste management systems and policies,” Gasataya said.
The study, funded with an allocated budget of P3.75 million, will gather critical data on the types and volume of waste generated daily in the city.
It will also project future waste generation trends and recommend strategies to improve waste collection, recycling, composting, and disposal systems.
As one of the country’s leading professional services firms, SGV will provide technical expertise to ensure that the updated Solid Waste Management Plan is tailored to the specific needs and realities of Bacolod.
Katrina Francisco, SGV Climate Change and Sustainability Services partner, said the project will serve as a foundation for long-term environmental reforms.
“This project is more than just a study. It is a crucial step toward transforming how Bacolod manages its waste. This will help the city create solutions that are not only environmentally sound but also economically sustainable,” Francisco said.
Gasataya emphasized that understanding the city’s waste composition, volume, and projected growth is essential in crafting smarter and more sustainable waste management strategies.
He added that the initiative forms part of the city government’s broader vision of building a cleaner, more organized, and more resilient Bacolod.
