BACOLOD City – Fire hit a squatters’ area in Villa Victorias, Barangay Zone 1, Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, razing around 33 houses made of light materials and leaving 43 families homeless.
Fire Officer 1 Vicente Tabiolo Jr., arson investigator, estimated the cost of damage at P1.8 million.
The fire started from the house of Ronilo Conje and easily spread to the neighboring houses due to strong winds, Tabiolo said.
The Bureau of Fire Protection in Cadiz City put out the blaze several hours later. Fire trucks from neighboring local governments helped.
Mayor Patrick Escalante ordered local social workers to assist the victims and evacuate them to the barangay’s covered court. He said they may also relocate in barangays Daga, Tinampaan, Cabahug, and Luna.
An electrical short circuit may have caused the blaze around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, fire investigators said./PN
