ILOILO — The fare for motorized banca services operating between Guimaras and Iloilo City has been set at P40 for regular passengers, following an agreement among the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), the Guimaras Provincial Government, and ferry operators.

The Guimaras Provincial Government announced Tuesday, March 24, that the new fare took effect the same day. Discounted fares of P32 will apply to senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), students, and pregnant women, in compliance with existing laws granting a 20-percent discount.

In a statement, the provincial government said the adjustment was reached “after careful consideration and extensive discussion” with stakeholders, aiming to strike a balance between the operational needs of the transport sector and the welfare of the commuting public.

Prior to the agreement, Gov. Ma. Lucille L. Nava and Cong. JC Rahman A. Nava led a consultative meeting to address fare adjustments for passenger vessels plying the Jordan–Iloilo City and Buenavista–Iloilo City routes.

The meeting was attended by Buenavista Mayor Samuel Gumarin, Jordan Mayor John Edward Gando, and representatives from MARINA Region 6, led by Atty. Nicole Amuan, along with ferry operators and transport groups.

Among those present were representatives from Bamosa Marine Transport Corporation, Guimaras Island Transport Multipurpose Cooperative (GITMPC), Buenavista and Jordan Ferry Inc. (BJFI), and RonJ 2.

Ferry operators said the fare increase is not solely due to rising fuel prices but is necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of sea transport operations.

They cited several factors, including increasing operational costs, the need to adjust crew wages in line with Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) mandates, and compliance with MARINA safety standards.

“These measures are essential to ensure that vessels remain seaworthy and compliant with national maritime regulations,” the statement added.

The provincial government also assured the public of its continued commitment to commuter welfare. It has formally requested MARINA to conduct a comprehensive study on fare structures to guide future adjustments based on data.

In addition, the province urged MARINA to expedite the renewal of vessel documentation to ensure sufficient boat availability, especially with the expected surge in passengers during the upcoming Holy Week and summer season./PN
