KALIBO, Aklan – The disaster management councils in Malay and Malinao towns in Aklan were hailed the best in Western Visayas during the regional Gawad Kalasag awarding ceremony in Iloilo City.
Malay’s Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) was the winner in the first- to third-class towns category, while Malinao’s MDRRMC topped the fourth- to sixth-class towns category.
Mayor Ciceron Cawaling received the plaque of recognition and the P50,000 cash prize for Malay from Office of Civil Defense regional director Rosario Cabrera.
MDRRMC officer Niño Carmelo Carmen received similar plaque and cash prize for Malinao during the Dec. 7 ceremony.
Meanwhile the Boracay Fire Rescue and Ambulance Volunteers was declared Best Private Volunteer Organization.
The founder Rear Admiral Leonard Tirol and MDRRMC-Malay officer-in-charge Rowen Aguirre received the award.
Kalibo’s Special Operation Unit was awarded Best Government Emergency Response Management (Advance Search and Rescue). Mayor William Lachica received the recognition.
Aklan province placed third in the Best Provincial DRRMC category. Capiz placed first, while the island province of Guimaras was second.
The local governments and volunteer groups were recognized for their “exemplary performance through strong linkages with stakeholders by having imbibed sustainability in the implementation of preparedness and resiliency in pursuit of excellence in the field of disaster risk reduction and management and humanitarian assistance.” (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
