Minor dies, 3 hurt in Candoni drag race mishap

BACOLOD City – A drag race event turned tragic in the town of Candoni, Negros Occidental. One life was lost and three individuals sustained injuries.

According to authorities, the victims were spectators of the drag race.

They were reportedly struck by a motorcycle that had lost control and veered off the race track.

Ang driver wala ya ma-control ang motor kag amo to nabuy-an ya ang motor, kag siya man naglupad man sya,” said Major Ruel Culanag, chief of Candoni police, in an interview with GMA Regional TV.

A young boy died of severe injuries, while the three injured individuals were a female, a barangay tanod, and a motorcycle rider.

The drag racing event on Feb. 8, which was immediately called off after the incident, was one of the activities lined up for the town’s Dinagyaw sa Tablas Festival 2024.

Mayor Ray Ruiz expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating that he may no longer permit similar activities.

“I am considering disallowing such events in our town in the future,” Ruiz said in a video posted on his social media.

Ruiz also mentioned that assistance has been provided to the families of the victims and offered apologies for the incident.

The event organizer, on their part, clarified that they did not neglect security and safety measures during the event./PN
