More family-beneficiaries to occupy Kalibo housing units

KALIBO, Aklan – Super typhoon “Yolanda” survivors will finally occupy the remaining relocation housing units here on Oct. 29s nearly eight years after the disaster struck.

Of the 400 relocation units, 300 have been occupied by affected families since the national government started the distribution last year.

Despite the construction challenges because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the housing units in Barangay Briones intended for those displaced by Typhoon Yolanda were completed.

“Yolanda” (international name” Haiyan) devastated Aklan and other parts of the Visayas in November 2013.

Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator Engineer Marlo Villanueva said the construction of decent housing units for the families residing in danger areas was made possible through the National Housing Authority (NHA) and the local government unit.

Karlo Nograles, head of the government’s Inter-Agency Task Force for the Unified Implementation and Monitoring of Rehabilitation and Recovery Projects and Programs in Yolanda-affected areas, turned over the 400 housing units to the local government unit of Kalibo on Aug. 26.

A total of 44,000 housing units have been turned over in various municipalities in Western Visayas since 2019, including 393 free housing units in Talon Hills, Altavas, Aklan.

“We want to assure the 400 families of safe, secure and sturdy houses,” Nograles said./PN
