KALIBO, Aklan – A big new plane is expected to bring in more Boracay-bound tourists to the airport in Barangay Caticlan, Malay town.
Airbus A320 of the Philippine Airlines (PAL) had its maiden flight from Manila to the Godofredo P. Ramos Airport on Nov. 18.
With 150 passengers onboard, the flight arrived at the airport 10 a.m. and was greeted with the traditional water canon salute.
The flight will operate from Caticlan to Manila three times a day: 9:45 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Godofredo P. Ramos Airport is managed by TransAire Development Holdings Corp., a subsidiary of San Miguel Corp.
San Miguel has a 25-year build-rehabilitate-operate-transfer concession deal with the Department of Transportation.
Before its expansion, the airport accommodates small propeller aircrafts — such as the British Aerospace BAE-146 of SkyJet, the ATR 72-500 of Cebu Pacific and the 76-seat Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 of PAL Express — due to limited runway capability.
During bad weather, some flights are also diverted to the Kalibo International Airport, a two-hour drive from Caticlan.
Other airline companies are planning to launch international and interisland flights to Caticlan using their own Airbus A320 aircrafts. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
