A NEW “Charlie’s Angels” movie is officially in development, with Sony Pictures at the forefront to revive the iconic franchise.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on Friday, Feb. 13, that the studio is developing a new version of “Charlie’s Angels,” with Pete Chiarelli, known for his work in the romantic comedies “The Proposal” (2009) and “Crazy Rich Asians” (2018), to pen the script.
Details remain under wraps at this time, with the official release date, director and cast yet to be announced. The outlet noted that Drew Barrymore‘s production banner, “Flower Films,” which produced the early 2000s “Charlie’s Angels” movies, may be involved in the project.
The franchise began with the television series “Charlie’s Angels,” which aired from 1976 to 1981. The original show followed three women, portrayed by Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith, who took on high-risk assignments involving organized crime and kidnappings.
After the series became a pop culture phenomenon, it was adapted for the big screen with the same title, starring Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. The 2000 film retained the focus on three women investigators working for the mysterious Charlie.
The film was a commercial success, grossing more than $260 million worldwide against a reported $93 million budget. A sequel, “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” was released in 2003. Diaz, Barrymore, and Liu reprised their roles, as did John Forsythe as the voice of Charlie in his last film role.
A later reboot, directed by Elizabeth Banks, was released in 2019. The film underperformed at the box office, earning about $73 million worldwide against a production budget reportedly around $48-55 million. It received mixed reviews from critics and audiences.
