SAN JOSE, Antique – From January to August this year, the Antique Police Provincial Office (APPO) recorded 146 cases of violence against women and children.
APPO data also showed 47 cases for children in conflict with the law and 150 cases of child abuse.
These figures emerged as barangay officials were urged to support the 18-day campaign to end violence against women starting this Nov. 25.
SP member Egidio Elio, chairperson of the SP committee on education, health, sanitation, and social services, said the activity is pursuant to Proclamation 1172 which declared Nov. 25 to Dec. 12 of every year as the 18-Day National Campaign to End Violence Against Women.
Barangay officials were urged to initiate activities at their level to help boost the campaign for the protection of human rights of women against violence and all forms of discrimination.
According to the Philippine Commission on Women, the activity is an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership at Rutgers University in 1991.
Participants chose the dates Nov. 25 (International Day Against Violence Against Women) and Dec. 10 (International Human Rights Day) to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a human rights violation.
In the Philippines, the government has expanded it in 2006 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 1172 to include Dec. 12, which marks the adoption of the United Nation Convention Against Transnational Crime, thus making it an 18-Day Campaign. (PIA-Antique/PN)
